Governor Tom Wolf recently announced that the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will distribute $13.1 million in Automated Red Light Enforcement (ARLE) funding for 41 safety improvement projects in 34 municipalities across the Commonwealth.

Neshannock Township was awarded $263,672 for the installation of a new traffic signal at the intersection of Route 18 (Wilmington Road) and Oakwood Way.  The new signal will provide improved operations for motorists along Oakwood Way and will include pedestrian access and emergency vehicle preemption. These improvements are set to reduce delay and improve ehance movement through the intersection.

Under state law, grant funding is provided by fines from red light violations at 31 intersection in Philadelphia.  The law stipulates that projects improving safety, enhancing mobility, and reducing traffic congestion can be considered for funding.  Communities submitted 116 applications, totaling nearly $33.6 million in requested funds.  Awarded projects were selected by an eight-member committee based on criteria such as benefits and effectiveness, cost, and local and regional impact.

Since 2010, the ARLE funding program has awarded $91.59 million, supporting 457 safety projects.
